“Encourage each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord. Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:19-20
I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m sad. I sing because someone has made me mad. (And no this isn’t the beginning of a Dr. Seuss book.) Let’s just say I sing because it feels my heart with joy.
Well, it may not be “singing” all those times, but I definitely “hum” a tune or two to keep me often calm, focused, or from going off on someone and saying or doing something I may regret. Really. Ask my kids. *smile*
Sometimes, when I’m cleaning or just hanging around the house, one of my family members may hear me humming the hymn “Oh how I love Jesus” and say, “Ut-oh, why are you mad?” They know that that is often my go to song. Many times I’m not upset with anyone, just happy, but…there are those moments when I tell them, “I’d rather hum than yell so just let me be.” Yep, there are those instances when I need to focus on my love for Jesus instead of my dislike for something else. Then, God will give me the words I need to chat with that “someone” later. *wink*
Like the scriptures say, spiritual music does encourage me. It encourages me to focus on God and not my problems. It encourages me to stay strong when I am weak. It encourages me to feel happy when times are tough. It encourages me to cry it out to God instead of keeping it all in and trying to solve problems on my own. It just makes me happy!
God is good at putting a song in my heart. And in return, I give the praise, glory, and thankfulness right back to Him.
What about you? Do you have a song in your heart? Allow God to give you a happy tune to get you through the day.
I pray many blessings and much JOY for you! Have a wonderful day. – Stephanie
