Luke 8:16-17 “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. Instead, they put the lamp on a lampstand so that the people who come in will have enough light to see. Everything that is hidden will become clear. Every secret thing will be made known, and everyone will see it.”
When I read the very first sentence of the above scripture I had to laugh. A story came to mind that I have heard many times in my life. Even though I’ve heard it several times, I still called my brother Kenneth and my mom for confirmation. Well, the story is…..When Kenneth was four years old, and I was just an infant, he had told mom that he wanted a candle in his room to make it look pretty like the rest of the ones in the house. So mom got him a candle and said that he could have it on his bedside table but he could not light it. She went to put me in my crib and when she was walking down the hall, she saw and smelled something coming from Ken’s room. What happened? Scripture came to life. Haha. Kenneth didn’t just want that candle on his bedside table sitting there not lit, so he got UNDER his bed and lit it. (I guess that four-year-old boy hadn’t read Luke 8:16 yet. Mom says that it was either strength from God or her adrenaline kicked into high gear because she lifted that heavy cotton twin mattress as if it was nothing and carried it outside to douse it down with the water hose. Then, later on that night (Kenneth says 9:00pm and mom says 2:30am) mom went to check on her four children and she noticed a glow coming from outside by the front door. That mattress had relit itself and could have caught the whole house on fire if it weren’t for a motherly-instinct to check on her children.
How can this story be tied into scripture in a more relevant way? Hmmm, I guess we can learn from Kenneth that secrets will be brought out. We need to keep The Light (God) out on the table for all to see. When we try to hide The Light or keep it a secret from others, God will have a way of making Himself known.
“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”
Let Jesus shine in and through you! He is alive! Happy Easter!
