A powerful combination: God and the love of a spouse. These are two things that David had on his side. 1 Samuel 18 says, “28 When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, 29 Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.”
I love my God and I love my man! Notice these two priorities are in order too. You must love God first and foremost. Love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Then you must love your spouse.
Some of you may say, “But my spouse is sometimes hard to love.” Well, aren’t we all? Like I’ve told my own kids before, “I will always love you. I may not like some of your actions or behavior, but I will always love you.” Nobody is perfect. Work on your love for them. Pray. Pray for your relationship with God, and your relationship with your spouse.
Be a power couple. I’m not talking about power with your money or for other status reasons. Be powerful in your love for God and for each other. So you may have a few enemies (like Saul). Don’t allow their “being a hater” get you down. They’re just jealous. That should encourage you to be an encouraging and godly example for them.
Love God. Love your spouse.
Ephesians 5:33, “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
