Years ago Tim and I went with a group of friends to stay the weekend at Cabbage Key, a quaint little island off the west coast of Florida. One of our friend’s mother lives on the island, and we went to her house to have dinner. After eating a delicious home cooked meal and enjoying the company of each other we all started heading back to our cottages for the night. The moon was barely to be seen and it was a dark dark night. On the way to the cottages we had to walk through a canopy of trees that were low and snug, like a tunnel. The mosquitos were out in full force. We created a human chain by latching on to each other as we walked through the dark passageway. It was so dark you could even see your hand if it were an inch from your face. We giggled as we walked at the thought of our “scared of the dark” moment. It was quite comical to us then, but the island was small and a couple of guys did know their way. I couldn’t even imagine doing that in an unfamiliar unsafe place. No thank you.
When I read Proverbs 13:9 this morning, that weekend gate-a-way adventure came to mind. It says in The Message translation, “The lives of good people are brightly lit streets; the lives of the wicked are dark alleys.” Now, I’m not saying that we were wicked that night (well….LOL. No, not really) , but the thought of that dark passageway is not a place where I would like to remain.
When I think of dark alleys, bad and creepy events come to thought. I would so much rather walk down a brightly lit pathway where I can see my surroundings.
1 John 1:7, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
John 8:12, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Isaiah 42:16, “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them”
