Footprints in the Sand
One night I had a dream that I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
Other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed
That during the low periods of my life
When I was suffering from
Anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.
So I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
That if I followed you,
You would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
The most trying period of my life
There have only been one
Set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you the most,
You have not been there for me?”
The Lord replied,
“The times when you have
Only seen one set of footprints,
Is when I carried you.”
Mary Stevenson
This is one of my husband’s favorite poems. When each of our children was baptized, we had a “Spiritual Birthday” lunch at home after church. We started this family tradition with our eldest, Hunter. We had invited family members and some of the ministers from church. Each family member or family represented was asked to give a meaningful “spiritual” gift (old or new). When each gift was given, the giver would tell a precious story or give good godly advice to the recipient. It was a precious time.
Tim’s gift to Hunter was a framed copy of the poem, “Footprints in the Sand”. Tim told Hunter how there will be times in his life where he may feel alone or is going through a difficult situation, but to remember that God will always be with him and they He is holding him in His arms through it all.
Hunter is now sixteen years old. He had his “Spiritual Birthday” celebration when he was seven years of age. This poem still hangs on his wall.
I was reminded of this poem this morning when I read Psalm 68:19, “Praise the Lord; praise God our savior! For each day He carries us in his arms.”
Is that comforting or what?!
He will carry you. Fall into His arms. Feel His love and security.
Blessings to you.
