Proverbs 17:1-2, “It is better to have nothing but a dry piece of bread to eat in peace than a whole house full of food with everyone arguing.”
I am so grateful that I grew up in a home that ate and prayed together at the dinner table. I can recall many a Sundays, and random days of the week, when not only the six of us would gather around the dinner table, but often grandparents or other relatives too. Good ole southern food was in abundance and the conversation was never lacking.
I can honestly say that I don’t remember strife around the table during this time. Well, maybe the occasional “I don’t like liver!” comment every now and then. Nope, dinner time was family time.
Is it like that so much today for many of us? With schedules differing for each family member, in many homes, “dinner time is family time” is lacking in our society.
I am so appreciative that my family can manage to eat and pray together probably six out of seven nights of the week. Do we always sit around the dinner table? Rarely do we sit at the dining table. We usually are gathering around the bar in the kitchen. The kids may not realized how blessed they are that we still eat together every night, but one day the will, and I pray that they will continue this important tradition when they have a family of their own.
I still have the same round dinner table in my home today that I grew up with as a little girl. Oh the stories it could tell over the last fifty years. If tables could talk. Now that would be an interesting book. We do use it during larger family gathering and special occasions. You know, every day is a special day because each day is a gift from God. So I believe that when I return home, we will start eating around the old table more often and even bring out the fine china. Why not?
I pray that your dinner table will have both the best of Proverbs 17:1, a table full of food and peace.
Happy dinner time!
Blessings to you all.
