Psalm 147:4, “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.”
When I read this verse today it reminded me of a question Cole asked while driving home last night from the family Christmas Eve gathering. He inquired, “Mom, which star is it we need to look for that was there when Jesus was born?”
This star Cole was asking about had a purpose. This star was an announcement for the birth of The King. This star guided the wise men to Jesus. This star brought about excitement and pointed to The Hope for all.
Take a look at Matthew 2:1-9:
Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise menfrom eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”
3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. 4 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”
5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said, “for this is what the prophet wrote:
6 ‘And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah,
are not least among the ruling citiesof Judah,
for a ruler will come from you
who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared. 8 Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”
9 After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.
Can you imagine? The sky is usually filled with stars, but this one star, on this specific night, must have been something extraordinary. Yes sir! That star in the sky shone upon The Star of the greatest love story of all time. The real “star” that night was a little baby boy, wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manager.
That star in the sky guided men, just like “The Star” (Jesus) guides us. That star went ahead of them, just like “The Star” goes ahead of us when we go to where He is guiding us.
I love how The Message translation reads in verses 9-10:
Then the star appeared again, the same star they had seen in the eastern skies. It led them on until it hovered over the place of the child. They could hardly contain themselves: They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time!
When you ask Jesus into your heart, He is in the right place. When you feel God’s presence, you can hardly contain yourself with gratitude, love, excitement, hope, joy, etc.
Getting back to Psalm 147:4, I can just picture God naming all the stars. Then on that special night He called a new star into place, The Star of Bethlehem. The star the shined brighter than any other. The star that announced the birth of His Son. God was saying, “That’s My Boy!”
Thank You, God, for sending us Your Son. Amen.
Much like Cole was looking for that star in the sky, we all need to look towards The Star (Jesus) to light our way and direct our paths.
Blessings to you!
MERRY CHRISTMAS! Happy Birthday, Jesus!
