Sometimes when I’m reading God’s word, I’m all into the story, and then all of a sudden there’s an imagery that is thrown in there that I was totally NOT expecting.
That was the case when reading Mark 14:43-52. The story about when Jesus was arrested is taking place. A servant of the high priest had just gotten his ear cut off with a sword. Jesus was questioning those who came to arrest Him about “why now?”, and then you read:
- “One of those following Jesus was a young man wearing only a linen cloth. When the people tried to grab him,he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.”
What??? Did I just read about the first ever streaker? How bazaar!
I search in the other three gospels to see if Matthew, Luke, or John mentioned the naked man. Nope. They didn’t include that portion of the day in their recollection of Jesus’ arrest.
Mark, you crack me up!
Well, whatever Mark’s reason was for including the streaker part is fine with me. It did get me reading deeper into God’s word. That’s always a good thing.
I hope you get into God’s word and find a few things that not only make you think, but give you a good laugh.
Blessings to you.

In John’s account of this Jesus asks them “who are you looking for?” They answered “Jesus of Nazareth”…Jesus said “I am he”. And many of the soldiers were pushed backwards& fell to the ground because of the power of his words.
Some scholars believe that as he said “I am”. Not only did the soldiers fall under the power of his words, but that people in nearby tombs were raised from the dead. Hence the man in a simple loin cloth…and when they grabbed at him he ran…who wouldn’t?
Thanks, Wendy! I love hearing and reading about what others/scholars have to say. Would I run? I would probably either run to the nearest tree to hide my nakeness or squat down in front of The I Am and stare in awe. 🙂
