Today Holly and I were walking on the beach and talking about the fine art of surfing. She is a novice at the sport, but desires to do so much more. I was comparing gaining knowledge and learning from those who know to just swimming out there and winging it.
In Proverbs 9 it is comparing wisdom and foolishness. Proverbs chapter 9 fit perfectly into our conversation.
There is an Easter Surf Fest taking place where we are staying. So Holly was able to observe professionals and amateurs out doing their thing.
After soaking in some knowledge from her observations, remembering what she has already practiced and read previously, Holly was ready to hit the waves.
I was so proud of Holly! She treaded out there, in the freezing Atlantic, in her wetsuit, and with great determination tried, paddled, and succeeded. Holly didn’t just stand up and surf once, but several times today. Go, Holly!!!
Oh my…get this…after her first successful wave, Holly was walking back out to surf again. I saw something swimming by in the wave. It appeared to be about a four foot tarpon, but I knew I wouldn’t be seeing that type of fish here. I noticed that Holly stopped in her tracks, looked down, make a 180, and started walking towards shore. I said with wide eyes, “Did you see it????” She said, “Yes! It was a shark.” We took a deep breath, saw others splashing around without a clue, and Holly stepped back in the water and headed out to surf again. (Sorry Grandparents!) Maybe that should be written for the “foolish” portion of Proverbs.
Holly didn’t let that shark get in her way of her determination. She got up about three more times, on a 6 foot board (Thanks, Taylors!!). That’s great (surfing on a short board) for someone who had only surfed once before (last summer).
After all her surfing for the day was done, I told her how proud of her I was.
When we came back to the room I finished reading the scripture for today. In Luke 31:22 Jesus had just come out of the water from being baptized, and God said “You are my Son, the one I love. I am very pleased with you.”
I felt a slight connection the scriptures. After Holly’s day in the water I was so proud of my daughter that I love so dearly. You go girl!
Blessings to you.
