When we are given a position that makes us feel like we have authority, we need to make sure we keep “in check” and stay humble.
When I read Luke 9:55, I giggle. Jesus had given His disciples much authority, and it is clear that they were taking advantage of it. Read Luke 9:51-56:
- “51As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.”
Can you just imagine James and John straightening up their backs, puffing out their chest, and rearing their shoulders back? With their bodyguard type of attitude and saying, “Let me at ‘em, Lord. Give us the go ahead and we’ll call fire down on their pathetic heads.”
Then Jesus gives them “the look”, shakes His head, and says, “Simmer down boys. That’s not how I roll.”
James and John get deflated and mosey on to the next destination.
Okay, maybe they didn’t use those exact words, but you understand.
God seems to have a way of humbling us when we get a little full of ourselves. At least I know He does for me. I’ve had my share of humble pie. That’s a taste I don’t like, but have learned to appreciate it.
After reading Luke, I turned to Proverbs 11:2, and the two seemed to fit together.
- “Proud and boastful people will be shamed, but wisdom stays with those who are modest and humble.”
Don’t get too big for your britches. Learn to humbly appreciate the prestigious responsibility you have of being called a child of God.
Blessings to you.
