This week is “Exam Review Week” at school. Each day we are reviewing concepts that the students have learned since the beginning of the year. For some, just remembering what they learned last week is a feat. So this week can often bring about stress (of having 6-7 different exams), yet also renewal of things that they’ve pushed back in their brain.
When I began reading scripture tonight, it was as if God handed me this scripture specifically for this review week. In Proverbs 2:1-5 it says, “My child listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.”
Reading these verses sounded like some of the very phrases that I’ve said to my students this week.
- Students, listen to every word that comes out of my mouth.
- Soak in each hint, method, and advice that I give you.
- Have your listening ears on and don’t let this knowledge go in one ear and out the other.
- Focus on doing your best and getting the problem right.
- If you don’t understand something, raise your hand and ask for help.
- Seek to understand.
- Treat your education like a treasure to excitedly seek.
Okay, so the last bullet point wasn’t something that I’ve mentioned to my students yet, but I like it! I believe they’ll hear those words tomorrow.
This lesson just doesn’t have to be applied in my classroom. This advice can and should be applied to our daily walk with God.
We can listen to God by being still. (Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God”)
We can treasure His commands by obeying and meditating on His word. (Psalm 19:14, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”)
Seek to understand, know, and grow more in Christ. (Matthew 6:33, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”)
Treat your gained insight and deep desire to want to know more about God like a treasure to excitedly seek. (Matthew 6:20, “Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.”)
I hope that every week is “Review Week” for you in Christ. Renew much godly knowledge you’ve had pushed back in your brain, and bring it to the forefront of every thought.
Blessings and God’s abundant love to y’all.
