When you were young did you say the prayer, “God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen”? It would be a prayer I’d say daily when I was a little girl. Even though it was said as a rote prayer, I did understand its meaning, and I grew to believe it in a deeper sense, not just say it. Later I learned to truly talk to God from the heart.
Well, much like that routine prayer, I have a sentence that I say in my prayer life daily. It comes from Deuteronomy 5:6, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
Lord, help me to love You with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength.
I do believe it, and try to live it, but there are times that I fail and give only a portion instead of the whole. God doesn’t just want a little bit of me, He wants all of me, and the same goes for you.
I find that when I make it “not about me” and focus on Jesus, I’m not so weak. He gives me the strength I need. When I fill my mind with godliness, my selfish desires seem to fade and His ways are so much better than mine. When I allow God to fill my broken heart with Himself, His love abounds in me even more than I can imagine.
You know what? I’m thinking that when we do love God will all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, those tough moments in life don’t seem so tough anymore.
In James 4:14 we read, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” So why not live this life loving God.
