The topic of gay/lesbian marriage has been a prominent issue of conversations for generations. Recently the Supreme Court declared Same-Sex marriage legal in all 50 states. Over the past few days I’ve seen numerous comments and photographs on social media and have heard opinions via conversations.
In life, we are encouraged to stand up for what we believe in. I just don’t want to stand up for what I believe in, but I want to share the biblical reasons why I believe the way I do.
How many times do people ask, “Where in the bible does it say….?” Well, I’ve compiled a few scriptures that discuss why homosexuality is wrong and why we are not to judge:
Homosexuality is wrong.
“There are things about God that people cannot see—his eternal power and all that makes him God. But since the beginning of the world, those things have been easy for people to understand. They are made clear in what God has made. So people have no excuse for the evil they do. People knew God, but they did not honor him as God, and they did not thank him. Their ideas were all useless. There was not one good thought left in their foolish minds. They said they were wise, but they became fools. Instead of honoring the divine greatness of God, who lives forever, they traded it for the worship of idols—things made to look like humans, who get sick and die, or like birds, animals, and snakes. People wanted only to do evil. So God left them and let them go their sinful way. And so they became completely immoral and used their bodies in shameful ways with each other. They traded the truth of God for a lie. They bowed down and worshiped the things God made instead of worshiping the God who made those things. He is the one who should be praised forever. Amen. Because people did those things, God left them and let them do the shameful things they wanted to do. Women stopped having natural sex with men and started having sex with other women. 27 In the same way, men stopped having natural sex with women and began wanting each other all the time. Men did shameful things with other men, and in their bodies they received the punishment for those wrongs. People did not think it was important to have a true knowledge of God. So God left them and allowed them to have their own worthless thinking. And so they do what they should not do. Romans 1:20-28.Honor God
We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. 1Timothy 1:8-11.Get right.
“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:6-9.God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.
“But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband.” 1 Corinthians 7:2.One wife and one husband. Period.
“Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality,10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.Call out to Him. Change.
“Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.” Leviticus 18:22.
“But anyone who is joined with the Lord is one with him in spirit. So run away from sexual sin. It involves the body in a way that no other sin does. So if you commit sexual sin, you are sinning against your own body. You should know that your body is a templefor the Holy Spirit that you received from God and that lives in you. You don’t own yourselves. God paid a very high price to make you his. So honor God with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:17-20. Again, honor Him.
“If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act.” Leviticus 20:13.
If you go to http://www.gotquestions.org it will answer the question, “What does the Bible say about gay marriage / same sex marriage?”This website sates, “We do our best to prayerfully and thoroughly research your question and answer it in a biblically based manner. It is not our purpose to make you agree with us, but rather to point you to what the Bible says concerning your question.”
We are not to judge others. That is God’s job. We are to love the sinners and hate the sin. Pray for others.
They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.” John 8:7-11.
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5.
“You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.2 And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. 3 Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? 4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” Romans 2:1-4
There are a plethora of bible verses regarding judging others. We are instructed and encouraged to pray for others.
I have acquaintances that are gay and lesbians. They are wonderful people with a kind and generous heart. Just because I don’t agree with their lifestyle, doesn’t mean that I don’t like them as a human being. Is their lifestyle glorifying God? No. Can hearts and lives be changed in any situation of sin in our lives? Absolutely. Sin, all sin, saddens me. I pray that the eyes of my friends will be opened and they will turn from their lifestyle of sexually immorality. Just as I pray daily for others to turn from their sinful ways in life, no matter what the sin is. To God, a sin is a sin. I just see the ramifications that the Supreme Court’s decision will lead to. And as a parent of three teenagers, I’m on my knees praying for our society who is so comfortably numb by the decisions that the world imposes on all. Will you join me in prayer?
I also hope that when you see a rainbow, you don’t automatically think of it as a symbol of the gay and lesbian community, but as it was intended to be…a promise and covenant between God and man. (Click here for bible verse regarding rainbows.)
When you have questions as to what is right and wrong in the eyes of God, seek His word. I hope that you will prayerfully open up the bible and seek His will and answers to your questions. I also hope that the above scripture verses will be beneficial to you when you need to share it with others.
I pray many blessings and much joy for you! Have a wonderful day. – Stephanie
Well said.
You just lost me.
I will no longer follow your blog.
Jesus is love and your perception does not sound like love.
Then you missed the point, Marti. Maybe one should read an article with an open mind and not one that is expecting to read what they want to read. I don’t agree with same sex marriage but it’s not my place to hinder someone’s happiness to enjoy the same qualities of life as myself. In Stephanie’s article, she encourages acceptance and she speaks of friends whom she cares for and LOVES, she’s not judging.
Marti, I’m sorry you won’t be following the blog anymore. Yes, Jesus is love. I’m not sure how my perception isn’t in love, when it came from the bible. I quoted scripture and shared God’s word. I love all. Thank you for your opinion.
Thank you Linda, for your comment and reply to Marti. Have a blessed day.
