It’s been a while since my family has participated in Little League sports (Youth sports…yes. ‘Little League’ baseball and football…a while), and each Saturday I am reminded of one of the reasons I honestly did NOT miss it throughout the years.
Sports has a way of bringing out the best in people. Being on a team or involved in any type of activity where you are being challenged physically and mentally is good for you. It teaches you patience in yourself and for others, determination to never give up, builds character, and you gain new relationships.
Participating in sports (and being an observer at sporting events) also has a way of bringing out the worst in folks as well. When I read today’s bible verse my mind automatically went to our Saturday “family” events out at the youth sports field.
For the past few Saturdays I sit in the stands and shake my head at the language being used. Parents…chill out! No wonder some kids grow up with the poor attitudes and mouths that they display on the field and court, because they are exhibiting the nasty habits their parents are spewing week in and week out.
Please allow me to remind you of to have a “whatever” attitude:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9
I want to encourage you to demonstrate this attitude in whatever you do in life. Think before you speak.
Please do not take this as a bashing on Little League. I grew up on the ball fields. I’m just trying to remind the audience and participators to tame your tongue.
Added Note: I am pleased to announce that today’s game was refreshing and peaceful. The good reasons for youth sports were evident. 🙂
