Recently while I was cleaning the house I started thinking about my mom’s 75th (shhhh) birthday coming up. She loves gospel music and hearing her children sing. That is her one requests for her birthday; for us to sing together. I imagined us singing songs like “I’ll Fly Away” and “Amazing Grace”.
One song that came to my mind while pondering about my sweet momma was a song she used to sing quite often in church when I was growing up. I can easily recall her standing at the pulpit, clearing her throat, asking everyone to bear with her, and then begin singing so beautifully and heartfelt the song “One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus”.
I can imagine that mom would reminisce those words (see below for the lyrics) throughout obstacles many in her life which she conquered with God’s help and strength. Through each phase and stage in life, she did survive…One Day at a Time.
We all need to remember that:
- We are human.
- We are more that we think we are.
- There’s a way out of our daily troubles, and that’s by looking up.
- We need to call out to Jesus daily.
- God will give us the strength we need to do what needs to be each day.
- The past is in the past
- We aren’t promised tomorrow.
- Live for today.
- Jesus walked this earth before and He’s seen the troubles here.
- He still looks down on us and understands the struggles we are going through.
- Again, take one day at a time…with Jesus.
Pondering on a song that I consider signifies my mother, I wondered what song from my past, which I used to often sing, would imply me. Amy Grant’s, “Father’s Eyes” was the absolute first song that popped into my head. (see lyrics below)
The lyrics state that when others look at me I hope they see:
- Someone who finds the good in others and situations when good is hard to find.
- Someone who knows to turn to God for help and not rely on this world to solve my problems.
- Someone who is empathic and compassionate.
- Someone who strives to be more like Jesus each day.
- And finally, someone you can tell who has Jesus in her heart by my words and actions.
It’s funny how songs from our past can define either who we are or how we live.
Oh, now I’m sure I could find various songs from all types of genre that could define me at various moments in my life (good, bad, ugly, funny, etc.), but those aforementioned songs are just two Christian songs that I now look back on and believe that they were put on our hearts and in our mouths for a reason. That reason would be to live them as a testimony.
Do you have a song from your past that you could infer is your testimony song?
I hope you have a happy tune in your mind and heart today.
I pray many blessings and much JOY for you! Have a wonderful day. – Stephanie
“One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus”
I’m only human, I’m just a woman. Help me believe in what I could be And all that I am. Show me the stairway, I have to climb. Lord for my sake, teach me to take One day at a time. Chorus: One day at a time sweet Jesus. That’s all I’m asking from you. Just give me the strength To do every day what I have to do. Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus. And tomorrow may never be mine. Lord help me today, show me the way One day at a time. Do you remember, when you walked among men? Well Jesus you know if you’re looking below It’s worse now, than then. Cheating and stealing, violence and crime So for my sake, teach me to take One day at a time. (Chorus)

“Father’s Eyes”
I may not be every mother’s dream for her little girl. And my face may not grace the mind of everyone in the world. But that’s all right as long as I can have one wish I pray; When people look inside my life, I want to hear them say [Chorus:] She’s got her Father’s eyes, her Father’s eyes Eyes, that find the good in things When good is not around. Eyes that find the source of help When help just can’t be found. Eyes full of compassion, seeing every pain. Knowin’ what you’re going through, and feeling it the same. Just like my Father’s eyes. My Father’s eyes. My Father’s eyes. Just like my Father’s eyes. And on that day when we will pay for all the deeds we have done; Good and bad they’ll all be had to see by everyone; And when you’re called to stand and tell just what you saw in me; More than anything I know, I want your words to be [Chorus]
