This past Sunday in our contemporary worship service we were having some technical difficulties. The praise band was in full “concert mode”, the colored lights were right on cue with each song, the sanctuary was full of folks standing to their feet to sing, and…we (not the praise band of course) had a little difficulty ourselves. We didn’t know all the words to the songs. We usually have the words flash across the two large screens for us to follow along to, but they were blank. Nada. Zip-zilch.
When Pastor Brian began to welcome everyone, he chuckled and announced, “We never knew how much we depended on the words.” (Pointing to the screen.)
Well, as my mind usually does, or as God frequently weaves little lessons into my psyche, when the pastor said those words a few correlations became apparent.
When the church members weren’t able to “depend on the words” on the screens:
- We were quieter in our participation.
- We were not as confident in what was supposed to be coming out of our mouths.
- We could hear the praise team singing the words, but had a little difficulty in completely understanding the words accurately.
This is what often occurs when we find ourselves in situations in life, but we aren’t bathed in God’s word:
- We have a tendency to not speak up or out for what we believe in because…
- We aren’t as confident in what we are supposed to be saying or how to get our message across.
- We may catch glimpses of scripture in a song, a devotional, or in listening to a pastor, but since we are not seeing the words ourselves, translation often gets lost or not as meaningful as it should be.
Well, what do you know…when we began singing the next song, our tech guys had solved the problem. Woohoo!
Now, the worship time took on a whole new meaning:
- Voices were being heard across the sanctuary in beautiful harmony because…
- The words on the screens gave us all confidence in what we were actually supposed to be singing.
- Now that we had visuals and could read the words accurately, hands began to be raised, and it seemed that the place was filled with true and meaningful worship between each member and God. I know my worship experience was richer because of those words being displayed.
Your days could be more meaningful if you:
- Open God’s words to see and read what He wants to share with you that day.
- Don’t only read it, but believe, study, live, and obey His words. Your day will be overflowing with harmonious moments.
- Allow God’s words to penetrate in and through you. When you do, you will experience great joy, understanding, and a peace that surpasses anything you could imagine.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
“Continue to read the Scriptures to the people, encourage them, and teach them.” 1 Timothy 4:13
“Open my eyes so that I can see all the wonderful things in your teachings.” Psalm 119:18
“Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. Those things were written so that we could have hope. That hope comes from the patience and encouragement that the Scriptures give us.” Romans 15:4
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Matthew 24:35
Oh, there is sooo many more marvelous bible verses to read. I want to encourage you to open God’s words and waller all in it.

I must say, as the person responsible for putting those words on the screen, I was in a panic. My heart raced, my palms sweated and I was praying hard! But I learned a very sweet lesson – as I saw three precious people make decisions to follow Christ and one family become members of our church, I realized that our great God doesn’t need technology! He is able to work in mighty ways if we are just willing to listen and obey. So grateful that He doesn’t need me, but allows me to be part of what He is doing!
Amen, sista!! Beautifully said, noted, and another lesson learned from God.
