Putting conditions on God are NOT a good thing. When we do so, we are limiting Him, having confidence in that our way is better, and believing that He doesn’t know-all and see-all.
Having ultimatums presented to Him, is nothing new to God. In Luke 4:1-13 we read when Satan tempted Jesus, not once, but several times. Christ was solid and stood His ground in scripture.
In the end of Satan’s demands, he walked away saying to himself, “There’ll be another opportunity for me to try Christ. I’ll get Him.”
Recently, during my scripture reading, the first two words spoken in John 11:48 by the Pharisees, resonated with me.
“If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.” John 11:48
Why did those words resonate with me? Because I’ve been guilty of giving God demands, especially when I feel that His timing is a bit leisurely for me.
Let’s back up a moment and understand what had occurred before the Pharisees spoke those words. Mary and Martha’s brother, Lazarus, had been dead for four days. These folks were like family to Jesus. Jesus requested for the stone to be rolled away from Lazarus’ grave. Martha (being the detail oriented lady) reminded Christ that it’s going to be a bit stinky, since her brother had been in the grave for so long. Not a problem for The Son of God. He called for Lazarus to come out, and he did…still wrapped in burial clothe and all. I don’t think the odor was of any concern for Martha at this point. It was at THAT moment the Pharisees became frightened and threatened of their position in the community.
Now, verse 48 takes place.
The entire chapter 11 is loaded with much insight, but I want to focus today on how we limit God.
Time and time again the Israelites would test and put limits on God. (Read Psalm 78 for a refresher course.) Yet, God was not one to be cornered or outdone.
His plan is ALWAYS best for us, even (especially) when we can’t see it. Take a breath and be still.
He is ALWAYS faithful to those who love Him. Love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
He is limitless in His love for us. His love abounds forever.
He is God. Period.
Much like Satan was (is) waiting for the next opportunity to put demands on God, he is giddy with the thought of tempting you to be anxious and doubt God and His plan. Just say, “Back off, Satan! Not today!”
I pray that you will rest in God’s unfailing love and His perfect plan for your life.
Blessings to you and yours,
Stephanie
