Today’s “Minute-less/MORE Monday video is at the bottom of the journal entry.
When you watch television, go to the movies, listen to secular music, walk through the halls at school (at any level), attend sporting events, and…well…just about anywhere you go…the use of foul language is prevalent.  Unfortunately, for many in our society, it has become the norm of their conversation, and many of us listening have become numb to this type of verbiage.
Out of all the inappropriate language that I hear, when others take the Lord’s name in vain, my body cringes.  It clearly states in Exodus 20:7 , “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse His name.” Isn’t this one of the Ten Commandments? Yes!  It is the fourth commandment.  God didn’t give these to Moses to simply suggest to His people.  They are called the Ten Commandments, not Ten Suggestions.  It would sere us well to uphold this command from The Lord.
I want to encourage you to:

  • think before you speak
  • ask yourself if your words will put a smile on God’s face
  • speak with words of encouragement
  • allow God to get ahold of your anger and thoughts
  • be kind to others.

A verse that has kept me from speaking wrong (and I’m not talking about just bad words, but gossip too), and I’ve shared it with so many students, my own kids, and others is Matthew 12:36, “And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.
Here are some bible verses for you to ponder and/or share with others as a reminder of our speech:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  Ephesians 4:29

Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. Ephesians 5:4

But now put these things out of your life: anger, losing your temper, doing or saying things to hurt others, and saying shameful things.Don’t lie to each other. You have taken off those old clothes—the person you once were and the bad things you did then. 10 Now you are wearing a new life, a life that is new every day. You are growing in your understanding of the one who made you. You are becoming more and more like him. Colossians 3:8-10

Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!  Turn away from evil and do good.  Search for peace, and work to maintain it. Psalm 34:12-14

It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.  Matthew 15:11

Talking trashy…it’s time to clean your filter. Build others up. Be encouraging. Be kind.
