There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13

This verse epitomizes what millions of military service men and women have done for our freedom.

Memorial Day, a day to remember those who have lost their lives for our country.

While reading up on the meaning and history of Memorial Day, I was convicted when I read “Because Memorial Day is a somber day to honor those who died in service to the country, saying ‘Happy Memorial Day’ is considered bad taste. For those who have lost family or friends through military service, the day is far from happy. If you feel the need to say something, try “Have a meaningful Memorial Day.” I do say, “Happy Memorial Day” on a social post or in passing. Now, I stand corrected, and I will try to be more thoughtful in my words.

Thinking about those who have lost their lives due to serving for our freedom, I also thought about the veterans and all who are first responders. One of my favorite memories of this past year’s Florida Strawberry Festival was when I was so honored to say the prayer on American Heroes Day. You combine my love for the festival, America, and Jesus…I was stoked to pray.

This took place moments before the 7:30 Lynrd Skynrd concert. In front of thousands of people, I had the opportunity to not only thank those who serve, yet share Jesus’ love too.

Here’s the prayer I prayed, then let’s create a new one for today’s Memorial Day:

Dear Lord,

We set aside today to honor the brave men and women who serve or have served our great country. All active, reserve, and retired military veterans, law enforcement, first responders, and healthcare professionals ARE our  American heroes.

We remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, and lift up their families to You. May they feel Your love and comfort surrounding them daily.

Lord, please put a hedge of protection around those who are currently serving in these positions. May their courage be strengthened as they continue to defend our communities and great nation.

God, we thank You for the greatest sacrifice of Your One and only Son, Who gave His life for us so that we will one day be with You in Heaven.

Now, just like the rain that fell on us today, may You reign in our hearts forever.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A prayer for Memorial Day:

Dear Lord,

In Your word You teach us that “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”. We set aside today to show gratitude to those men and women who have done just that. The love they have for our great country does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Because of their sacrifice, we get to live in freedom. May we commemorate their lives by displaying courage and strength in our own lives.

We pray for their families that they be comforted by You and feel a sense of pride for their hero who served. May they experience Your love surrounding them and giving them peace.

Jesus, You did exactly this for us over 2,000 years ago. You gave up Your life so that we can live in eternal freedom. Thank You, dear Heavenly Father, for the sacrifice of giving us You one and only Son. Because of Your sacrifice, I have the opportunity to live a life more abundantly, now and forever.

Amen

The sacrifice of the men and women in the Armed Forces are tremendously appreciated.  Their sacrifice didn’t come alone…The families of these brave soldiers have sacrificed their loved ones to serve our country, so that we can be free. Thank you for your service as well

Blessings to you and yours,

Stephanie
