This year’s weather has been extreme: freezing temperatures have become more frequent and rain has been scarce. The combination has left our property lifeless and barren. There is more dirt and weeds than grass. When you walk across the yard, dry, brittle blades stab your feet and the ground crunches beneath you.
After the cold finally relented, the landscaping was pruned. What were once lively, colorful hedges now stand as bare sticks jutting from the soil.
Yet over the past few days I’ve noticed life: bare sticks are bursting with variegated leaves, and magnolia, gardenia, confederate jasmine, lantana, and wood iris perfume the air and restore color to the landscape. Whites, yellows, purples, and greens now sprinkle vividness across what was once dry and barren.
Ah, the rush of newness and hope consumes me. I see this as a reminder that when life seems desolate and defeated, I must cling to hope and trust that God will renew it and breathe life into what seems lost.
The wilderness and the dry land will be glad; the desert will rejoice and blossom like a wildflower. It will blossom abundantly and will also rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, steady the shaking knees! Say to the cowardly: “Be strong; do not fear! Here is your God; vengeance is coming. God’s retribution is coming; he will save you.” Isaiah 35:1-4
In what ways do you need to actively “tend” your heart to help the newness take root?
Lord, thank You for pruning and for making all things new. Breathe life into what feels dead and bring hope to the hopeless. Draw near to me; let me sense Your presence and the sweet fragrance of Your love. Amen.
Blessings to you and yours,
Stephanie
