Years ago my friend, Susan, gave me a tea towel that read, “I am sorry for the things I said when I was hungry”.  She knows me well. The hunger mood pendulum swings between me either being extremely quiet or grouchy when my tummy starts to rumble.

Tim can tell when I need to eat, and is very forgiving if I do say something in a snippety way.  He will say, “You must be hungry.” Hunger and that current mood equals “hangry”.

You’ve probably seen those Snickers commercials when they display the “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” themes. When the person takes a bite of the candy bar, they become their normal self again. (See the YouTube video below on the top 10 snickers funniest commercials.  Too funny!)

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert. He was taken there to be tempted by the devil. Jesus ate nothing for 40 days and nights. After this, he was very hungry. The devil came to tempt him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become bread.” Jesus answered him, “The Scriptures say, ‘It is not just bread that keeps people alive. Their lives depend on what God says.’”
Matthew 4:1-4

When I read Matthew 4:1-4, where Jesus was led into the wilderness, tempted for forty a days and nights, fasted and became hungry, I’m challenged to be more like Christ.  How? First of all, let’s take into the account that He fasted for FORTY days and nights. This chic couldn’t imagine fasting for two days…talk about hangry! When Jesus was tempted, He didn’t rip open a Snickers bar to combat Satan’s tactics.  He confidently and eloquently spoke scripture to squash Satan’s hankering.

This encourages me to know and have God’s word in my heart, in my mind, and on my tongue…ready for battle.

The scriptures aren’t just going to pop in my mind if I don’t even crack open The Book.  Think about taking a test without studying. You’d fail. The only way for me (us) to be ready to resist temptation from the devil is to open the Bible, read it, believe it, and study it daily.

In my Life Application Study Bible, the commentary states this:

  • A person has not shown true obedience if he or she has never had an opportunity to disobey.

  • Your convictions are only strong if they hold up under pressure!

  • Satan is real and is constantly fighting against those who follow and obey God.

  • When temptations seem especially strong, or when you think you can rationalize giving in, consider whether Satan may be trying to block God’s purposes for your life or for someone else’s life.

  • Temptation itself is not sin.  We sin when we give in and disobey God.

  • The devil often tempts us when we are vulnerable…but he also likes to tempt us through our strengths…We must guard at all times against his attacks.

Good stuff right there!  So true!

I want to pray for and encourage you to fill your mind with God’s word.  Be ready for battle daily by putting on the full Armor of God before you start your day.

Remember the Snickers theme, “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry”, well…feed yourself of Bread of Life and quench your thirst by drinking The Living Water.

Don’t be hangry, be hungry for the word of God.

Blessings to you and yours,

Stephanie

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.  The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

All Scripture is breathed out by and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
