“You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around. That’s what it’s all about.” Really?
“What is the meaning of life?” This is a quote that we’ve all heard many times. It is interesting that with different ages and stages in life, you will hear a different answer from people.
When I read Ecclesiastes today, I felt like I was reading the story of a man’s life that was like a dog chasing its tail. Life is definitely a cycle. Everything was meaningless. But, one thing was for sure; in the end we all die and can’t take anything with us.
The author appears to be one “whose wealth, wisdom, and glory paced him at the upper limit of human success.” (Quoted from the Holman Bible Dictionary) He had been there and done that. He was giving many wonderful opportunities and life, and he accepted them all.
When I first read Ecclesiastes 1-3:8, I was almost giggling at the author’s writing and feeling sorry for him at the same time. Then when I reread it again in another translation, the words started sinking in a little more and I concluded that the author of this book realized that even though his life on earth was like a dog chasing its tail, the true meaning of life will be endured when his earthly life is over. It was as if he realized that we will really start living and having true meaning in life when we are all with God in heaven.
Even though life may be “meaningless” to him, we need to live with his realization of “the end in mind”. If we live with the hope that we will one day be eternally with Jesus; that should give us meaning to get up each day and live our life with great gusto for God.
The bible is full of encouraging hope on how to live. “What is the meaning of life?” Well here are a few verses to help you:
Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” If we will just do this! If we’ll seek Him first each and every day of our lives, then our life will have meaning.
Romans 6:4, “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Ahhh, a newness of life. How? Through Jesus Christ. Who doesn’t want to have a “new lease on life”? Don’t just start your day seeking Him, but start a new life with Him in you.
Matthew 25:21, “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” I so want to hear those words when I see God face to face. “Enter into the joy of your master.” Gladly! That “joy” and keeping the end-in-mind is what keeps me going.
Matthew 22:37, ““You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Can those words get an “Amen” from you? Amen and amen! Again, if we will just seek Him first and love Him will all we have, then living life with that attitude has great meaning.
Have you discovered the true meaning of life? I’m not talking about delicious home-baked cookies, a fast car, or The Hokey Pokey. I’m talking about The True Meaning in life….Jesus Christ and accepting Him as your personal Savior so that you will have life eternally with Him in glory. I pray that you do. If not, what are you waiting on? Give meaning to your life here on earth and thereafter.
Blessings to you.
