“Fill us with your love every morning. Let us be happy and enjoy our lives.” Psalm 90:14 (part of the prayer of Moses, the man of God.)
When Moses prayed this prayer to God, his people were going through a difficult time. I love how in the midst of difficulty, Moses didn’t just wallow in his trials, but knew Who to turn to for joy, and when.
I was not always one to do my devotion times in the morning. I like my sleep. But when I was doing one of Beth Moore’s bible studies she challenged us to get up early with God each morning to have our quiet time. I wanted to shrug off the idea, but gave it an attempt. My eyes would often want to close, and more sleep was calling my name. It was just easier for me to complete my quiet time in the evenings before I grabbed some shut-eye.
Growing up my mom always told me that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. I echo this to my own children now. Well, breakfast comes in the morning, and if it is the most important meal, then there must be a reason.
Also, I’ve heard how breakfast is like putting gas in your car before you go on an adventure. No gas, no traveling experience.
Well, I prayed about reading my scriptures in the wee hours of the morning, and thought about the two analogies above.
If the first meal of the day is the most important meal to get you going and energized, and if filling up your tank before a trip is a necessity, then time with God first thing has to be important.
Life is an adventure. Agree? Then filling up with God should take first priority of each day.
It has been many years since Beth’s challenge and I’m now a devoted “start-my-day-with-God-in-devotion-time” kind of girl. I do notice a difference in my attitude and energy level when I don’t make my morning time with God a priority. God just has a way of making me happy and makes life much more enjoyable (just like the Psalm says).
I want to challenge you to spend time with God first thing each morning. Start off with prayer, and then read a verse or two or dive deep in His word. Maybe find a devotional book, scripture flip calendar or web devotion to get you going and ponder on throughout the day. If you start off with five minutes with God before you do anything else in the morning, you just may find yourself increasing those minutes to thirty or an hour.
Give it a try. Don’t give up. Allow God to fill you up with His goodness each morning.
Blessings and God’s abundant love to all.
