When my home is a mess, I get stressed. Now, am I one that has to have it perfect all the time? No way! It is never perfect (don’t go looking in my hiding places), but I do like it at least “picked-up”. You never know when someone is going to stop by for a visit. Right now, if I were to go around to each room I would most likely discover a pair of mix-matched or dirty socks, a few Legos or army men, or a drinking glass left on a side table in at least three rooms. And I’m not even factoring the kids’ rooms into that situation. Good grief! Those are rooms that I sometimes just close the doors and walk away. Do you know what happens when it does get all clean and organized? I usually just pray that I can enjoy it for just a 24 hour period before things get out of place again. It will get messed up again.
Each morning I have to consciously choose not to go and start cleaning and preparing the house for the day ahead. I must put my “Martha” self aside and get my “Mary” on.
In Luke 10:38-42 is the story of Martha and Mary. I can so imagine myself in both situations. But who chose right? You see, Martha was “running around like a sprayed roach” busying herself with housework and cooking. I always laugh when Martha says to Jesus, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” I can hear the frustration in her voice. Notice the exclamation mark at the end of her sentence. Boy oh boy, has she worked herself up and worried herself with “stuff”. All the while, Mary was just sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to Him teach.
So the answer to the question on who made the right choice is Mary. Jesus confirmed it when He said, “Martha, Martha, you are getting worried and upset about too many things. Only one thing is important. Mary has made the right choice, and it will never be taken away from her.”
When I make the conscious choice to daily sit at Jesus’ feet and soak up His Word that is the best choice I can make to start my day. The cleanness of the house will come and go, but The Truth will never be taken away from me.
His Word remains true. 1 Peter 1:24-25 says, “As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.”
God is never changing. Malachi 3:6a says, “I am the LORD, and I do not change.”
He will always remain the same. Psalms 102:27, “But You, O God, are always the same; You will live forever”
Go get you Mary on!
